Gail S. Halvorsen The Bottom Line:  A true story about the experiences of the author during and after the Berlin Airlift.  The heart warming tale of "The Berlin Candy Bomber", Col. Gail S. Halvorsen

Pros:  A wonderful story about the heroic efforts of the Americans joined by the English and French which began in June 1948, a massive airlift effort to bring to Berlin, a city completely blocked off by road and rail by the Russians; the food needed to sustain its people.

Cons:   A bit of a slow start for those of us who are not particularly interested in the technicalities of aircraft.  Although it does give some background into what the pilots were dealing with in their efforts to complete their missions.

Description:  Col. Halvorsen, one of hundreds of Americans involved in the airlift met a group of children standing by the fence at the Berlin airport.  He was impressed to share two sticks of gum with them and promised candy the next time he flew over the area.  The story of how these two sticks of gum and the ensuing candy drops grew into an epic of good will-spanning the globe and touching hearts everywhere.
